Elizabeth Buckley School opened
its doors in September of 1986, under the guidance and inspiration
of Nancy Bourey, a teacher, and speech and language pathologist.
This new school - the first of its kind in Canada - was
created to help bridge the gap between the worlds of hearing
and hearing-impaired children, a need brought sharply into
focus by the tragic death of a deaf teenager and former
student of Ms. Bourey.
The name Elizabeth Buckley was chosen to honour Bourey's
grandmother, an exceptional teacher in New York . As a struggling
young widow, Buckley opened a school in her home, and provided
a valuable service to many.
Today, Elizabeth Buckley School provides integrated educational
opportunities for elementary aged children. The school offers
excellent class sizes and a wonderful student to teacher
ratio. Although most of the children are hearing, all students
learn sign language and are provided with a solid educational
foundation.
